Western democracy is at one of those turning points, much as it was in the 1930s. The alternative to making the necessary changes to democracy is to head down the road to more authoritarian political experiments, something that occurred in some countries in the 1930s with disastrous results. The testing time for Western liberal democracy is here; hopefully it is up the task.
